Creek County Associate District Judge April Sellers White Among the Fifty Women Making a Difference in Oklahoma

Associate District Judge April Sellers White has been selected by The Journal Record as one of the fifty Outstanding Women Making a Difference in Oklahoma this year. Each year fifty finalists are selected from all sectors of business, the professions and community organizations for their excellence in their chosen field, for their participation in community activities and for their overall contributions to improving life in Oklahoma. Judge White was honored with this award in 2006 and is again being honored with a 2008 award at the Cox Center in Oklahoma City on September 25, 2008.

Perhaps best known for her judicial service on children’s and family cases, Judge White has served on several task forces and boards at local and state levels which deal with children’s and family issues. She chaired the Creek County Juvenile Justice Task Force for 15 years which brought professionals and parents from across the county to help create solutions for problems facing children. She has served continuously on the Executive Board of the Oklahoma Judicial Conference since before 1991. Judge White has served on interim study committees formed by the Oklahoma Legislature addressing issues of adoption law reform and juvenile mental health law.

In 2006, Judge White was invited by the Carl Albert Institute of the University of Oklahoma to participate as a faculty member in residence for a week with college women from across Oklahoma teaching and encouraging them to become more actively involved in their communities. In 2008, Judge White was the only Oklahoma elected official participating a forum on improving public confidence in government held in Georgia by the Southern Women in Public Service.

Judge White is part of Oklahoma’s first and only sister-brother state court judge team with her brother, Jefferson Sellers, who is a District Judge for Tulsa and Pawnee Counties.

Our Associate District Judge, April Sellers White, has been selected by Oklahoma’s most outstanding women lawyers and judges to receive a Mona Salyer Lambird Award for her dedication and excellent judicial service during her professional career including 25 years on the bench as Creek County’s first woman judge. April Sellers White grew up in Drumright as the daughter of Peggy Sellers and the late Jack Sellers. After seven years’ private practice in Sapulpa, including six years with her family firm, Judge White was appointed Special District Judge for Creek County, becoming the first woman judge to serve in our county on the District Court bench. During her judicial career, she has handled all types of cases including civil and criminal jury trials, divorce, protective orders, child support enforcement, juvenile, mental health, probate, guardianship, adoptions, restricted Indian land transaction approval hearings, small claims and weddings.

During her professional career, Judge White has been active in community activities on both local and state levels, particularly those which involve children and families. She has served on the Legislative Committee or Executive Board of the Oklahoma Judicial Conference continuously more than seventeen years. She is well respected throughout the judiciary for her knowledge and expertise, particularly in matters involving children. In addition to her professional activities, Judge White has been very active in the first United Methodist Church in Sapulpa, teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, as well as serving in various capacities within the church. She has also been active in Kiwanis and Business and Professional Women.

Please read the following descriptions of our new committees and contact Lauren Allison, Jennifer Ward, or J.V. Frazier if you interested in serving as a members and/or chairperson or nominating another lawyer to serve as a member and/or chairperson of any of the following committees:

  • Creek County District Court Rules Committee: This committee will include a group of 3-5 lawyers appointed to review the new Creek County District Court Rules. As representatives of our Creek County Bar Association, this committee should offer questions on rule applicability and intent, seek clarification of rule language, and generally provide constructive feedback on the new Creek County District Court Rules to members of our Creek County Judiciary. This committee will also give reports on the Creek County District Court Rules as requested by the Creek County Bar Association by and through its officers. Nominees for this committee must be paid members of the Creek County Bar Association currently in good standing with the Oklahoma Bar Association. Preference will be given for lawyers with the most practice experience (i.e. years admitted to practice) in Creek County.

  • Bench & Bar Committee: This committee is an original Creek County Bar Association committee currently inactive after the passing of its founding member, Harry M. McMillan. This committee is currently comprised of Lester Henderson, Esq.(Sapulpa), Charles Watson, Esq. (Drumright), and the late Harry M. McMillan, Esq.(Bristow). This committee is intended to discreetly and respectfully address disputes between practicing members of our bar association and members of our Creek County Judiciary. This committee was originally designed to affirmatively resolve conflicts before animosities between bench and bar lead to any formal complaint. The activities of this committee are intended to remain confidential. Nominees for the seat formerly held by Mr. McMillan must be paid members of the Creek County Bar Association currently in good standing with the Oklahoma Bar Association.

  • County Outreach & Public Relations Committee: This committee will include a group of 3-5 lawyers appointed to plan a positive marketing strategy for the Creek County Bar Association through charitable and community projects in Creek County. This committee is designed to create opportunities to improve the image of lawyers in our communities through service-related activities for members of the Creek County Bar Association. This committee will also give reports to the Creek County Bar Association as requested by and through its officers. Nominees for this committee must be paid members of the Creek County Bar Association currently in good standing with the Oklahoma Bar Association. In order to promote widespread projects and publicity, preference will be given to ensure that, in addition to an at-large chairperson, this committee has representation from ideally all three (3) divisions of Creek County (Sapulpa, Bristow, & Drumright).

  • Awards Committee: This committee will include a group of 3-5 lawyers appointed to receive and review award applications submitted by members of the Creek County Bar Association, including but not limited to, the Liberty Bell Award. This committee will select yearly award winners and ensure an application on behalf of any Creek County winner is forwarded to the Oklahoma Bar Association for statewide award consideration. This committee will also give reports regarding deadlines and selected winners to the Creek County Bar Association as requested by and through its officers. Nominees for this committee must be paid members of the Creek County Bar Association currently in good standing with the Oklahoma Bar Association.

Nominations for committee membership must be received on or before Monday, April 7, 2008 at 5:00 PM. After accepted by the nominee, committee appointments will be made public via this website on or before Friday, April 11, 2008.

April Bar Meeting Slated for April 10, 2008 at 11:30 in Bristow!

In an effort to accomodate requests from certain members to host a regular meeting of the Creek County Bar Association in Bristow and in order to experiment with new ideas to improve attendance at our regular meetings, our officers have elected to schedule our April bar meeting for Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 11:30 AM at the new Coachlight Restaurant in Bristow, Oklahoma. For those of you who do not regularly practice in Bristow, the Coachlight Restaurant is located in the building formerly known as the 19th Hole Restaurant or the Bristow Country Club just adjacent to the Bristow Golf Course. The Coachlight Restaurant features a wonderful buffet featuring classic American cuisine as well as a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, and main dishes on its regular lunch menu. The desserts, including a variety of homemade pies, are also terrific! TU Chilifest Set for April 4, 2008 at 7:00 PM at Reynolds Center at the University of Tulsa!

Please mark your calendars for the University of Tulsa College of Law Chilifest Cook-Off on Friday, April 4, 2008 at the Reynolds Center at the University of Tulsa. Doors open for the event at 7:00 PM. We need to select a theme for our chili this next week. You will recall last year we featured "Plaintiff's County Chili." I have received a suggestion from one member to focus upon the rich railroad history of our county, but we are always open to suggestions from all members! We need to also ensure that we have members working our Creek County booth to make certain we are encouraging guests and Judges to take notice of our delicious recipes and individual theme. We would like for members to volunteer to work at the Creek County booth for at least thirty (30) minutes of the event, and our Creek County Bar Association officers will be at the booth for the entire event. If you are interested or plan on attending, please call Lauren Allison at (918) 367-3244 or e-mail her at: laurenatlaw@allegiance.tv to reserve your time to work at our Creek County booth. It is our hope to post possible theme suggestions on our website next Wednesday, March 26, 2008 for voting my our members. Please e-mail your ideas to Lauren Allison and check the website next Wednesday to cast your vote!
